Finishing Touches: How to Accessorize Your Room

The last step in creating the room of your dreams is adding the finishing touches, the accessories. The amount and type of accessories that you are going to need to finish the room is dependant on the mood you're thing to create. If you are looking to create an over the top look with expensive design details it is going to be more costly. But if you are leaning to the clean and simple look that might be a little less frightening to your pocketbook.

Helpful Steps to Create Your Dream Room

  • Create a budget!
  • Furniture stores have professionals come in a design the layout, colors, and placement and style of their accessories. Don't be discouraged if you can't create the same look, that is what they do for a living. Ask a designer or an design consultant in the store to help you create a look you want.
  • Find your design style: Classic, Country, Contemporary, Eclectic, Asian Style, American Colonial, Retro, French Classic, Transitional... there are many categories of style out there pick one (or two) that work for you.
  • You can mix different styles and periods.
  • Write a list of some of the pieces that you might want to see in your room, or purchase some "home" magazines that have designs that you like and use those ideas as a starting point.
  • Contrasting colors can create a beautiful room and add the finishing touch only if it is done correctly! Mixing different textures, fabrics, and throwing in splashes of color can add some excitement to a current bland color palette.
  • One of the most inexpensive ways that will have the most impact in a room is choosing a new paint color for your wall(s).
  • Remember that the light inside your house will make colors look different depending on the amount of light that you get. Test paint colors first. What looks fabulous in the store might not look so good on your wall.
  • Don't try to have too much going on in a room. Clean lines and simple accessories can create an expensive look for you.
  • Some of the most basic accessories to add to a room are lighting, rugs, wall sculptures or paintings, and floral arrangements.
  • When decorating your bedroom think about purchasing a new bedding ensemble, or just a new comforter with a couple decorator pillows.
  • Mirrors can make rooms appear larger and/or brighten it up. But be careful what they reflect... a nice garden that reflects light into the room is nice, but a sink full of dirty dishes, no so much.
  • Shop flea markets and specialty stores... they are budget friendly!
  • Get rid of the clutter. Find storage options to hide it.
  • Efficient Lighting is key.
  • These are some great places to find all kinds of accessories:
IKEA, Macy's, Pier 1 Imports, Target, Marshalls(in store only), Crate & Barrel, T.J. Maxx, Ross (in store only), Cost Plus World Market, Red Envelope(online only), Bellacor (online only), and Pottery Barn to name a few.
